About…
How was The Black Cat Coffee Shop born?
As far back as I can remember, one of my very first memories with my mum was baking cakes together. She had a real gift for it, even though she was never formally trained. She passed on to me her love for baking, and that’s where it all began…
Scottish by birth, I’ve always had a deep affection for the food of my homeland, and for British cuisine more generally. I can still almost taste my grandmother’s Red Leicester and marmalade toasts, the scones from the little coffee shop near her house, and the rich slices of Devil’s chocolate cake we’d share in Oban, Scotland.
Whenever I post here, I say “we”, even though I’m the only one doing the baking, because the spirit and love of my mum and grandmother are in every single recipe. They are with me always. I’m simply the physical extension of their souls. From above, they help guide me in sharing the love of good food.
I’ve been vegetarian for nearly four decades now, and I care deeply about reducing environmental impact. That’s why I adapt my recipes to vegan versions and organic whenever possible. Animal welfare matters just as much to me, and that’s where the name The Black Cat Coffee Shop comes from. It’s a tribute to my beloved cat, Sirius, he’s the one in the logo, with his little bent and broken ear. In Scotland, black cats are a symbol of good luck and prosperity, so the name felt just right.
I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all my lovely taste-testers! 🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻, thanks to you, I’m able to improve every single day. And a very special thank you, Mowgli — none of this would have been possible without you.
